Anyar fermented bean paste business becomes thriving again

A type of Anyar’s traditional food, pon ye gyi (fermented bean paste) trade has now expanded again. In NyaungU Township, orders for fermented bean paste have mounted, for giving as gifts as well as for reselling.

“Fermented bean paste has high consumption, many people like it. Fermented bean paste is well-known as Anyar’s souvenir. It is also produced from Magway Region. We have overseas orders for fermented bean paste. It is ordered to eat and present as gifts from Anyar,” said an official from Anyar traditional foods distribution in NyaungU Township.

The population of fermented bean paste makers has expanded since 2023 as the price is steady but the trade has increased, according to fermented bean paste businesses from Hse village in Ngathayauk of NyaungU Township.

The flavour of fermented bean paste made in Ngathayauk is distinctly good and more popular, said an owner of fried noodle, fried rice and rice salad shop using fermented bean paste.

“I sell fried noodle, fried rice and rice salad made of fermented bean paste as well as chicken and pork meals mixed with fermented bean paste. Most of my customers are fermented bean paste crazy. Fermented bean paste is more perfect with pork. People eat it by cooking or salad and some fry it. We order fermented bean paste from NyaungU’s Ngathayauk because it is more popular and it tastes like creamy and mild sweet. Some fermented bean paste tastes a little sour,” said Ma Maw Maw Win, owner of Pon Ye Gyi PKU in Pakkoku Township.

There are about 35 fermented bean paste making businesses in NyaungU and Ngathayauk, from there, fermented bean paste are distributed under different brand names across Myanmar, through wholesalers.
