In the first six working days of May, 1,350,000 visses of onions from various towns entered the Yangon market, with a daily average of 200,000 visses. With the increased supply of onions this week, the price has dropped, according to market sourses. Demand in the Yangon market also fell, dragging the price down.Apart from the Yangon market, more than 150,000 visses entered the Myingyan market daily, but only about 100,000 visses entered the Pakokku market. The onion price on 7 May was slightly lower than at the end of April. With some purchases from closely-watching brokers’ centres amidst very high onion production, the fall in onion price cannot be so severe, said onion farmers.Onion growers may earn more this year than in the regular summer purchase season. The average yield of onion per acre is at least about 4000 visses, so farmers can earn almost double this year. There is a prospect for onion traders in other towns to make more profit this year than in normal years, Ko Thein Hla, an onion trader in other cities, told the Global New Light of Myanmar (GNLM).
