MoALI to grant permits for coffee growers in Pyin Oo Lwin

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation will allot land to coffee growers in PyinOoLwin.

A plan is underway to create Pyin Oo Lwin in Mandalay Region as a coffee land. Interested coffee growers, individual Myanmar nationals, and companies can apply for land permits at the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation in Nay Pyi Taw starting on 6 June. Those who acquire land must cultivate coffee beans in line with the rules and regulations of the ministry. The deadline for applying is 7 July.

The micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) based on coffee and local products are being prioritized in the PyinOoLwin area. Efforts are being exerted to enhance coffee cultivation in PyinOoLwin to contribute to the socioeconomic development of the region. 

There are around 40,000 acres of coffee across the country, with an estimated production of 8,000-10,000 tonnes. Coffee zones are designated in northern Shan State, Nawnghkio, Ywangan and PyinOoLwin, Mandalay areas. The coffee plantation is also 

found in Chin State, Thandaunggyi, and Pa-O. Myanmar’s Arabica coffee from the PyinOoLwin and Ywangan areas is recognized as speciality coffee.

About half of Myanmar’s coffee output is sent to the US, European countries, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, China and Chinese Taipei. Myanmar Coffee Association aims to export about 2,000 tonnes of coffee this year.

Myanmar delivered about 1,000-1,500 tonnes of coffee to China and Thailand in the April-June period last year through border posts and conveyed 500-800 tonnes to European countries, Japan, South Korea and Asian countries.
