In the fruits market, rambutan has been in high demand and has a lot ofconsumers.Rambutans imported from Thailand are bigger and more beautiful than thoseof locally-grown fruits, which is why they have been more marketable.

“People enjoy Thai rambutans more because they are bigger and beautiful.Price is different between Burmese rambutan and Thai rambutan. Those, who canafford more, buy Thai rambutan. People buy rambutan for eating rather than for giving as present. Thai rambutans are grown in Chiang Mai and Burmese rambutans are grown mainly in Mawlamyine,” said Ma Khine Moe Thet, owner of fruits wholesale and retail trading at Thanzay in Lanmadaw Township.

Generally, there are two varieties of rambutans depending on how much flesh are available, and  two native species- kankalay 1 and kankalay 2 are ideal to growin Myanmar. Rambutans are mainly grown in Tanintharyi Region, Mon State and Kayin State in Myanmar. A rambutan tree can produce about 1000 fruits, live nearly 50 years and fruit production increases year on year. Normally it bears in May and June.
